Super 8 Motel St. John's

Tourist Attractions St. John's, Newfoundland

St. John’s is the largest city and capital of Newfoundland & Labrador. With a population slightly over 100,000, St. John’s is second largest city in Atlantic Canada after Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is the twentieth largest metropolitan area in Canada.

In 1497, during the feast of Saint John the Baptist, John Cabot and crew became the first Europeans to sail through the Narrows and into St. John’s harbour. Our city’s name can be traced back to this historic feast and famed explorer.

As you may have guessed, St. John’s is a city rich in history. It was from Signal Hill that electrical engineer Guglielmo Marconi established the first transatlantic wireless communications back in December 1901. Today, Signal Hill is a Canadian Historical Site and home to an interpretive centre highlighting this noteworthy achievement.

With a strategic harbour located on the North Atlantic, St. John’s has been a vital port and shipping centre for centuries. In fact, St. John’s’ economy has always been as closely linked to the ocean as it has to its status as the province’s capital city. Shipbuilding and offshore fishing, long mainstays of St. John’s’ economy, are now complemented by offshore oil and gas exploration. Tourism and technology sectors also continue to bring new business opportunities and prosperity to the area.

St. John’s is home to Memorial University, featuring a student body of over 20,000, with undergraduate and graduate-level learning opportunities. The College of the North Atlantic is also located here in St. John’s, NL.

Our city is the eastern terminus of the Trans-Canada Highway, known regionally as Highway 1. St. John’s is also located on the Avalon Peninsula. The Isthmus of Avalon, a narrow section of land only five kilometres in width, connects this peninsula to the rest of the island of Newfoundland.

St. John’s is situated in a North Atlantic Maritime climate. The morning fog quickly burns off, giving way to clear skies, and fresh, salty air. During the summer, the cool ocean breeze moderates the temperature, creating pleasant days for discovering all the many things to do in St. John’s. The winters are pleasantly milder than most other North Atlantic cities. Average summertime temperatures are between 10C (50F) to 20C (68F) and winter temperatures tend to hover between -1C (30F) and -8C (17F).

One thing you’ll quickly discover about St. John’s citizens – we know how to have fun! You’re always welcome to join in the festivities when you are in town. Love sporting events? Check out Mile One Centre, home to the St. John’s Fog Devils – our QMJHL hockey team. St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, is also home to the oldest sporting event in North America — the Royal St. John’s Regatta. This event is held each August and dates back almost 200 years to 1818! In 2006, our province’s men’s curling team, skipped by local talent Brad Gushue, won Olympic Gold in Turin, Italy.

When the day ends, St. John’s’ nightlife starts. St. John’s could rival New York as the city that doesn’t sleep. Come down to George Street and see for yourself. Closed to vehicular traffic, pedestrians can frequent any number of pubs, nightclubs and local watering holes. This is where St. John’s goes to live it up on the weekend. In fact, there are so many establishments here that George Street is known for having the highest density of pubs in North America. Now that’s variety!

From entertainment to sports, sightseeing and natural splendour, there are so many things to do in St. John’s at any time of the year. Best of all, Super 8 Motel puts you closer to of all the action than any other St. John’s hotel or motel.
