Summer Activities in St. Johns NL

Summer Activities in St. Johns NLSummer features a wealth of activities and things to do in St. John’s. From exploring the historic downtown waterfront of North America’s oldest city to seeing the many sights located here in Newfoundland & Labrador’s provincial capital, you’ll never run out of things to do. And when you select Super 8 Motel St. John’s’ quality accommodations, you’ll be minutes from all the action.

Each summer, St. John’s plays host to North America’s oldest sporting event — the St. John’s Royal Regatta, which started in 1818. Held on Quidi Vidi Lake, this unforgettable event draws thousands of spectators and participants from around the world.

Downtown is always buzzing during the summertime in St. John’s. The waterfront is home to plenty of boutiques, cafes, bistros and colourful historic architecture. A leisurely stroll in downtown St. John’s will reveal many hidden treasures waiting to be discovered.

Just outside of town, you’ll find even more opportunities for exploration. Visit Cape Spear, the eastern-most point in North America, where dramatic sunrises and sunsets await you. Also, being the closest North American city to Europe, St. John’s is the site that Guglielmo Marconi chose to establish transatlantic wireless communications in 1901. You can visit the exact spot at the Signal Hill Interpretive Centre, a Canadian National Historic Site. At the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve you can engage in whale watching excursions. The North Atlantic I will take you to the humpbacks, minkes, fins, orcas and dolphins found in the coastal waters near St. John’s.

Activities continue well into the evening here in St. John. Take a stroll along George Street, home to North America’s highest density of pubs. Each summer, the street comes alive with the six-night George Street festival, which concludes each year on the Tuesday prior to the Royal Regatta. In October, it’s the site of the annual Mardi Gras. For added convenience, George Street is a pedestrian area closed to vehicular traffic, making it a perfect spot to walk, people watch and take in the fun!

Don’t forget to visit Pippy Park, home of the Fluvarium. This is not an actual aquarium, as the aquaculture is not in captivity. Instead, it offers you an underwater view of a natural river, including the species that inhabit this special ecosystem. Famous for its Peter Pan statue, Bowring Park is another great local park. It was donated to the city of St. John’s in 1911 on behalf of the Bowring Brothers.

Love to golf? Pippy Park features the 18-hole Admiral’s Green golf course. Other popular public golf courses in the St. John’s area include: Bally Hally Golf & Country Club (18 holes), Golfer’s Paradise, Wilds at Salmonier River (18 holes), Willows at Hollyrood (9 holes) and Woods at Southlands (18 holes). See, there are always great things to do here in St. John’s, NF. And no other St. John’s hotel or motel puts you as close to all the action as Super 8 Motel.
